Cultural Narrative
Our Name
Ngai Tūāhuriri gifted the names Te Kaha and Te Kaharoa to the stadium project in 2022.
The stadium is One New Zealand Stadium.
The whenua beneath the stadium is called Te Kaha.
The whole precinct, the area boarded by Madras St, Tuam St, Barbadoes St and Hereford St, is known as Te Kaharoa.
Te Kaharoa means "Enduring Strength", and refers to the efforts of Tāne to bring light into the world.
The Story
The Story
Tane & The Separation
Matiaha Tiramorehu's story tells how Tāne separated Ranginui (the Sky Father) and Papatūānuku (the Earth Mother). Ranginui longed to bring light and warmth, between them. In response, their son Tāne and his brother Paia used four pillars (Toko-Maunga), carved from the Maire tree, to gently part their parents. Tāne also hid fragments of Te Kore - a source of energy within the Southern Alps. In this passage Matiaha explains how water emerged from Te Kore, making its way out of the mountains and moving upon the inland valleys, forming tributaries, feeding and creating the braided rivers we know today upon the Canterbury Plains.

Artwork
In these artworks, we celebrate our Waitaha-Canterbury. Using shape and form inspired by our surrounding landscape, our rich cultural histories, the aesthetic of old Christchurch and our new cityscape. The design and build of the Stadium has included a partnership with Ngãi Tuahuriri, our artist, and project teams. This work has been led by artist Morgan Darlison.

To whakamanuhiri (host, welcome) our guests we acknowledge the environment that surrounds us. This artwork reflects the environment directly behind each side of the facade as you circle the facility.
Our identity is inseparable from the Port Hils, the abundance of Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū (Banks Peninsula), the presence of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana (The Southern Alps), Te Tai o Mahaanui (Eastern Coastline), and the steadfast grace of Maukatere (Mt Grey). Drawing inspiration from the contours of our surrounding landscapes and waterways, our cultural history, the nostalgic charm of historical Christchurch, and our contemporary urban landscape.
